Korea
My
first trip to Korea was to Korea University in 1996. I attended
classes at the College of Sociology. The pictures below were taken
with my friends and classmates. My timing couldn't have been any
better. I arrived during rivalry week with the other prominent
University, Yonsei. While most of my friends were seniors, it
was still fun to observe the rivalry. Most of our time was spent
eating, drinking, and shooting pool at the pubs near the University.
The photo to the right was taken at a park, one of many in Seoul.
Korea is one
of my most frequented counties and home to many of my closest
friends. Korea's food is second to none. Some of my favorites
are Kalbi (or any Korean BBW), Bulgogi, Toppogi, and any variety
of Kimchi. Nightlife in Seoul is astounding to say the least.
It's hard to explain, but once you've been there (at least Seoul)
you'll know what I'm talking about...good food, good drinks, great
atmosphere, close friends, and exciting fights (at least if you're
with Jon).
On my visit
to Seoul right after the World Cup, I noticed many distinct changes.
The difference in development from when the bubble economic burst,
in the late '90s and right after the World Cup, in 2002 was like
night and day. Seoul did a complete 180 and there was a high level
of national pride.
The best and
worst development between the late '90s and 2002 were:
Best: The COEX Mall in Samsong-dong; and,
Worst: The Incheon International Airport, so far away

Last year
I was able to have a reunion with some of my Korean college friends
from the States. My good friend Won got married to a wonderful
lady and my friends Mac, Sang, and Ryan were all working for great
companies. Most surprising was my friend Jon that could speak
and read Korean better than I could ever hope to.
